Corporate strategy and business strategy are two distinct but related concepts in strategic management.
Corporate strategy refers to the overall plan that guides a company’s actions and decisions at the highest level. It defines the company’s long-term goals and objectives and outlines the broad strategies and initiatives that will be used to achieve them. Corporate strategy is typically set by top-level executives and is designed to create value for stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, customers, and society as a whole.
On the other hand, business strategy is concerned with the specific actions and decisions of individual business units within the organization. Business strategy defines how a specific business unit will create value and achieve short-term objectives. It involves decisions about product development, marketing, pricing, and distribution, as well as optimizing performance within a specific market or product category.
In other words, corporate strategy provides the framework for how the organization as a whole will create value and achieve long-term success, while business strategy focuses on how individual business units will create value and achieve short-term objectives.
To give an example, a company’s corporate strategy may involve diversifying into new markets, while its business strategy for a particular business unit may focus on developing new products within its current market. The two strategies work together to achieve the company’s overall goals and objectives.
